Add shipping rates and free shipping

Give a shipping zone a flat price, free shipping over an amount or a price for orders between two amounts, with a delivery provider and delivery days.

Last updated

Set what customers pay for delivery. A shipping rate gives a zone a price, or free delivery, and can apply only to carts in a range of amounts, name a delivery provider and say how many days delivery takes. This article goes through every field of the rate form, how checkout chooses which rates to show, and how to make delivery free over an amount.

Rates live inside shipping zones, so add your zones first: see Set up shipping zones by area. Shipping rates are on every plan. To add or change them, your role needs the Manage shipping rates and delivery providers permission, which the Store owner and Store manager roles have. Sales staff can open the page and read your rates, but a change they try is refused and nothing changes: a save or a delete shows You do not have permission to do this. See Staff roles: what each one can see and do.

Open a zone on its rates

  1. In the sidebar, under Operations, open Shipping rates.
  2. Select the zone's row, for example Amman. It opens below its name and shows its regions, its cities and its rates.
Each rate is one line: its name and price, then its order amounts, delivery days and provider.

Each rate shows:

On the rateWhat it means
Name and priceWhat the customer sees at checkout. Free for a free-shipping rate.
Order overThe rate has a Minimum order amount only.
Order underThe rate has a Maximum order amount only.
Order betweenThe rate has both.
Days, such as 1–2 daysMinimum delivery days and Maximum delivery days. 2+ days means a minimum only.
The provider's name, with a lorryThe Delivery provider the rate names.
InactiveThe rate is switched off. It is dimmed, and checkout does not offer it.
Edit and DeleteThe pencil and the bin.

Selecting the row again closes the zone, and so does opening another one. The zone's row also says how many rates it has, and the Rates counter at the top adds up the rates of every zone, switched off or not.

If the zone cannot open, Could not load this zone’s rates. appears in place of its rates. Select Try again beside it.

The whole page: one zone open, the others closed.

Add a rate: a name and a price

  1. On the Shipping rates page, select the zone's row to open it.
  2. Select Add rate beside Rates.
The form opens with only Rate is active ticked. Rate name and Price are required.
  1. In Rate name, type the name customers will choose at checkout, for example Evening delivery.
  2. In Price, type what the customer pays, in your store's currency. For JOD 3.500, type 3.5.
  3. Fill in the optional fields you need. Each is explained in the sections below.
  4. Select Save.
A flat rate: one price for every cart, with a provider and delivery days.

The form closes, Rate added. appears at the bottom of the screen, and the rate joins the zone. Checkout offers it at once to customers whose address matches the zone.

How checkout chooses the rates to show

When a customer types their address, we offer every active rate that meets all of these:

  • its zone is active and matches the address (see Regions and cities)
  • the cart fits its order amounts
  • it has no provider, or its provider is active

The cheapest rate is chosen for them, and they can pick another. Each option shows the rate's name, its price (or Free), and a line with the delivery days and the provider's name, such as 1–2 days · Rawabi Express. The order keeps the rate's name and price, so changing a rate later does not change orders already placed.

Free shipping from a minimum order

To deliver orders of JOD 60 or more for free, add a free rate that starts at 60:

  1. On the Shipping rates page, select the zone's row to open it.
  2. Select Add rate beside Rates.
  3. In Rate name, type a name such as Free delivery.
  4. Tick Free shipping. Price disappears.
  5. In Minimum order amount, type 60.
  6. Select Save.
Free shipping from JOD 150: tick Free shipping and set the minimum order amount.

The order amount we compare is the total of the products in the cart, before any discount code and before delivery. Both limits include the amount itself: a cart of exactly JOD 60.000 meets a minimum of 60.

Your paid rate still applies to carts of 60 and over, unless you stop it. Give it a Maximum order amount just under the free rate's minimum. Layal's Standard delivery stops at 59.999, so a cart of 60 sees only Free delivery, and a cart under 60 sees only the paid rate.

Tip

Set the paid rate's maximum to the free rate's minimum less the smallest amount in your currency. For JOD that is one fils (0.001), so 59.999 for 60. If both said 60, a cart of exactly JOD 60.000 would be offered both.

A reduced price for orders between two amounts

Give one zone several prices by cart size: a rate for each band, each with its own Minimum order amount and Maximum order amount. For example, Layal's Amman zone charges:

CartRateMinimumMaximum
Under JOD 30Standard delivery, JOD 2.500empty29.999
JOD 30 to 59.999Reduced delivery, JOD 1.5003059.999
JOD 60 and overFree delivery60empty
Three bands that do not overlap, plus same-day delivery for any cart.

Leave the amounts empty on a rate that applies to every cart, like Layal's Same-day delivery. Customers then see it beside whichever band their cart is in, as a second choice.

Delivery provider: any, or one

Open Delivery provider to tie the rate to one of your delivery providers. The menu offers Any provider and your active providers, the default one first.

Only active providers are listed. Any provider leaves the rate free of one.
ChoiceAt checkoutWhen you ship the order
Any providerThe option shows no provider. The shipment starts on your default provider, or, with no default, on the first active provider from A to Z.
A providerThe option shows its name, such as Sahm Delivery. The shipment starts on that provider while it is active.

You can change the provider on the shipment either way. See Ship an order with a tracking number.

A rate tied to a provider leaves checkout while that provider is inactive, and comes back when the provider is active again. If you switch off a provider, check the rates that use it. See Set the default delivery provider.

Delivery days shown at checkout

Minimum delivery days and Maximum delivery days tell customers how long they wait. Type whole numbers. 0 means the same day, so Layal's same-day rate is 0 to 1.

Checkout shows the days only when you fill in both, as 1–2 days. With one of them, the console shows 2+ days (a minimum only) or 2 days (a maximum only), but checkout shows no days for that rate.

If both are the same, such as 2 and 2, the console shows 2 days, but checkout shows 2–2 days.

What the form refuses

The form stays open on a refusal and keeps what you typed. A refused field turns red with the reason under it, and Fill in every required field. appears at the bottom of the screen.

Saved empty: a rate needs a name, and a price unless it is free.
Each minimum must be the same as its maximum or below it.

A few refusals come as a message at the bottom of the screen after you select Save:

  • Order amounts cannot be negative. or Delivery days cannot be negative. Clear the minus sign.
  • Rate name must be 200 characters or fewer. Shorten the name.
  • Shipping rates can only be assigned to active delivery providers. The rate names a provider that has been switched off since. See Edit a rate.

If the connection drops, Could not reach the server. Check your connection and try again. appears. If our server is briefly unavailable, Could not save changes. appears. Either way the form stays open: select Save again.

Edit, deactivate or delete a rate

Edit a rate

  1. On the Shipping rates page, select the zone's row to open it.
  2. Select Edit (the pencil) on the rate.
  3. Change what you need.
  4. Select Save.
The form opens with everything the rate has.

Rate saved. appears, and the next checkout uses the new rate. Orders already placed keep their delivery charge.

If the rate's provider has been switched off, Delivery provider shows Any provider when the form opens, but the rate still names the old provider, and Save is refused. Open Delivery provider and choose an active provider or Any provider, then save.

Deactivate a rate

Switch a rate off to stop offering it for a while, such as same-day delivery during Eid, and keep its settings.

  1. Select Edit on the rate.
  2. Untick Rate is active.
  3. Select Save.
Untick Rate is active and save. Tick it again to bring the rate back.

The rate is dimmed and marked Inactive, and checkout stops offering it. It still counts in the Rates counter.

Delete a rate

  1. Select Delete (the bin) on the rate.
  2. The prompt Delete rate says This deletes the rate. This cannot be undone. Select Delete, or Cancel.
Deleting a rate cannot be undone. To pause it, deactivate it instead.

Rate deleted. appears, and the rate leaves the zone.

Every order keeps the rate it was placed with, so a rate that customers have already chosen at checkout cannot be deleted. When you confirm, the prompt closes, the rate stays, and a red message at the bottom of the screen says why: Customers have used this rate in their orders, so it cannot be deleted. Deactivate it instead.

Standard delivery is in Layal’s past orders, so it stays. Untick Rate is active instead.

To stop offering it, deactivate the rate: select Edit on it, untick Rate is active and save. Your past orders keep their delivery charge either way. A rate no order has used yet, such as one you added by mistake, deletes at once.

Warning

A zone with no active rate is not offered at checkout. If you switch off or delete the last active rate in every zone, nobody can check out until you add one.

Free shipping with a discount code instead

A free-shipping rate gives free delivery to every cart over an amount. For free delivery only for some customers, or only for a few days, add a discount code with the type Free shipping instead. The customer types it in their cart, and delivery costs nothing whichever rate they choose.

Discount codes are on Starter and up. On Free, Discount codes carries a padlock in your sidebar. See Add a discount code and Plans and what each includes.

If your store charges tax, whether the delivery charge is taxed too is a setting: see Set tax, payment methods and guest checkout.

Next, add the delivery provider your rates will use, or go back to your shipping zones.
