By default a campaign goes to every confirmed subscriber the moment you send it. This article shows how to send it only to subscribers of one language, or to those who joined after a date, and how to set a day and time for it to go out on its own.
Everyone confirmed, by default
The audience is set in Who gets it, just above the buttons in the composer. It has two controls:
| Control | What it does | When you leave it alone |
|---|---|---|
| Subscriber language (the list that reads Everyone) | Sends only to subscribers of one language. | Every language. |
| Subscribed after (the date field) | Sends only to people who confirmed on or after a day. | Any date. |
Left as they are, the campaign goes to every Confirmed subscriber. Whatever you choose, it never reaches people who are Pending or Unsubscribed: they have not agreed to receive it, or have asked to stop. See Manage your newsletter subscribers.
The audience is saved with the campaign. When you open a draft again or copy a campaign, its audience comes back with it.
Subscribers of one language
- In Who gets it, select the list that reads Everyone.
- Choose a language. The list holds your store's languages, by name, for example English and العربية.
Only subscribers whose language is the one you chose receive the campaign. A subscriber's language is the language your storefront was showing when they subscribed.
Each subscriber still gets the version written in their language. So to send an Arabic campaign only to subscribers whose language is Arabic, choose العربية here and write the Arabic version in the composer's Arabic card (see Write your other languages).
As soon as you narrow the audience, a Send to everyone button appears under the controls. It clears both the language and the date in one go. To send to every language again but keep the date, choose Everyone in the same list.
Subscribed after a date
- In Who gets it, select the date field beside Subscribed after.
- In the calendar, use the arrows to change month, then select a day.
The campaign then goes only to subscribers who confirmed on or after that day. The day you pick is included, counted from midnight UTC, which is 3 in the morning in Jordan: someone who confirmed between midnight and 3 a.m. Jordan time on that day is left out. To be sure of including them, pick the day before.
This counts from the day each person confirmed, which can be later than the Subscribed date on the Subscribers page, because that date is when they first typed their address. Use it, for example, to welcome everyone who joined since your last campaign.
To remove the date, select the × in the date field (Clear), or Send to everyone.
When you set both a language and a date, a subscriber must match both: for example, subscribers whose language is Arabic and who confirmed after 1 September.
How many it will reach
The number beside Reaches, next to the buttons, is how many confirmed subscribers the campaign will go to with the audience you have set. It updates every time you change the language or the date.
The same number appears in the question Send now asks before it sends. The list is counted again at the moment the campaign starts, so anyone who confirms or unsubscribes in between is counted then.
When the audience matches nobody, Reaches shows 0, and Send now and Schedule are greyed out. The line under the buttons then says Nobody has confirmed a subscription yet, so there is nobody to send to., even if you do have subscribers. Widen the audience, or select Send to everyone.
Schedule a campaign
Write the campaign and set its audience first, then:
- Select Schedule instead. A Send at row opens under the buttons.
- Select the date field and choose the day.
- Check the time. It starts at 09:00; select it to change the hour and minutes.
- Select Schedule.
The time is in the time zone of the computer or phone you are using. In Jordan, 09:00 means 09:00 Amman time.
The console saves the campaign, sets its time and says Campaign scheduled. The composer empties, and the campaign appears in Past campaigns marked Scheduled.
Schedule stays greyed out until you have chosen a day and a time, the subject and message in your main language are written, and Reaches is more than 0. If the console says Could not change the schedule., check that the day and time are still in the future, then try again. Select Schedule instead again to close the row without scheduling.
Tip
Send yourself a test before you schedule. Once the campaign is scheduled you cannot open it to check it without unscheduling it.
At the time you chose, within about a minute, the campaign starts sending exactly as if you had selected Send now: its badge changes to Sending, then Sent, and the bell tells you how it went. If you have the Campaigns page open at that moment, it keeps showing Scheduled until you reload the page. If at that moment nobody matches its audience, nothing is sent, and the campaign goes back to your drafts without a time.
Scheduling and unscheduling need the Send campaigns permission, like sending. See Staff roles: what each one can see and do.
Scheduled campaigns in the list
In Past campaigns, a scheduled campaign shows:
- Its subject and the Scheduled badge.
- The date and time it was created.
- Goes out, followed by the day and time it will send, with an Unschedule button.
- Two icons: Duplicate, to copy it into a new draft, and Delete draft, to delete it.
A scheduled campaign has no pencil icon: it cannot be edited while it waits. To change its words, audience or time, unschedule it first. Deleting it stops it for good. See See how your campaigns did and reuse them.
If your store moves below Growth, a scheduled campaign does not go out. It stays in Past campaigns under the plan lock, reading Scheduled for instead of Goes out, with Unschedule and Delete draft, so you can still stop it. Left as it is, it moves back to your drafts at its time and the bell tells you. See Campaigns need the Growth plan.
Unschedule a campaign
- In Past campaigns, find the scheduled campaign.
- Select Unschedule on its Goes out line.
The console says Schedule cancelled. The campaign becomes a Draft again, with its pencil icon, and nothing is sent.
To change it and set a new time:
- Select its pencil icon, Edit draft, to open it in the composer.
- Make your changes.
- Select Schedule instead, choose the new day and time, and select Schedule. Or select Send now.
You can unschedule only before the campaign starts sending. If the console says Could not change the schedule., reload the page: the campaign may already have started.
Next, see how your campaigns did, or write your next one.
