Manage your newsletter subscribers

Who has subscribed, who still has to confirm and who left; find a subscriber, export the list, unsubscribe someone or delete them permanently.

Last updated

The Subscribers page lists everyone who has asked to hear from your store by email. Use it to see who has confirmed, who still has to, and who has left, to find one person, to download your list, and to remove someone who asks.

How customers subscribe and confirm

Customers join your list themselves, from the sign-up form in the Newsletter section of your storefront's home page: an email field and a Subscribe button. The form appears only when that section has a title. You write the title and the line under it in Storefront Studio: in the sidebar, under Storefront, open Content, then Newsletter. See Write your storefront text and Arrange your homepage sections.

Every new subscriber has to confirm:

  1. The customer types their email address and selects Subscribe.
  2. The storefront tells them to check their inbox and select the link to confirm.
  3. We email them a confirmation link under your store's name. The link works for 48 hours.
  4. When they open the link, they become Confirmed and start receiving your campaigns.

Until they open the link, they stay Pending. If the link runs out, they can type their address in the form again and we send a fresh one. Someone who is already confirmed and subscribes again gets no second email.

Each subscriber's language is the language your storefront was showing when they subscribed. It decides which version of a campaign they receive.

Note

You cannot add anyone to the list yourself. Only people who confirmed from their own inbox are on it, so everyone you write to has agreed to hear from you.

Confirmed, Pending and Unsubscribed

  1. In the sidebar, under Marketing, open Newsletter, then Subscribers.
The counters at the top always count your whole list

The three counters at the top count your whole list, whichever tab or search you are looking at. Below them, the list shows the newest subscribers first:

ColumnWhat it shows
EmailThe address the person subscribed with.
StatusConfirmed, Pending or Unsubscribed (see below).
LanguageThe language the storefront was in when they subscribed, for example English or العربية.
SubscribedThe date they first typed their address into your form.
IconsUnsubscribe (the amber icon) and Delete permanently (the red bin). Point at an icon to see its name.
An unsubscribed row has no Unsubscribe icon, only the bin

Each status means:

StatusWhoGets your campaigns?In the export?
Confirmed (green)Opened the confirmation link.YesYes
Pending (amber)Subscribed but has not opened the link yet.NoNo
Unsubscribed (grey)Left using the link at the bottom of a campaign, or you unsubscribed them.NoNo

The tabs narrow the list to one status. All shows everyone.

Confirmed: the people your campaigns reach
Pending: they have not opened the confirmation email yet
Unsubscribed: kept as a record that they left
  1. Select the Search by email box.
  2. Type all or part of an email address, for example a name or a domain.
  3. Press Enter.

The search finds the text anywhere in the address and ignores capital letters. It works inside the tab you are on, so you can search the Pending tab only.

“odeh” finds every address that contains it

When nothing matches, the page says No matching subscribers. Select Clear filters to empty the search and go back to the All tab.

Nothing matches, but the counters show the list is still there

Export the list

  1. Select Export CSV.

The button reads Exporting… while the file is prepared, then your browser downloads newsletter-subscribers.csv. It holds every Confirmed subscriber, whatever tab or search you are on, with three columns:

ColumnWhat it holds
emailThe subscriber's address.
languageTheir language as a code: en, ar or fr.
confirmed_atWhen they confirmed, in UTC.

Pending and unsubscribed people are never in the file, because they have not agreed to receive email. Export CSV is greyed out while you have no confirmed subscribers. If the download fails, the console says Could not export the list. Try again.

Exporting works on every plan. Use the file only to write to these people about your store.

Unsubscribe someone

When someone asks you to stop emailing them, by phone, WhatsApp or a message:

  1. Find them in the list, or search by email.
  2. On their row, select the amber Unsubscribe icon.

It happens at once, with no question first. Their status changes to Unsubscribed, the counters update, and the console says Subscriber unsubscribed. If a campaign is going out at that moment, they do not receive the rest of it.

The row and the counters change straight away

You can also unsubscribe someone who is still Pending. Their confirmation link then stops working.

There is no button to undo it. Only the person can join again, from the form on your storefront, and they have to confirm again. Could not unsubscribe them. means the change did not go through. Try again.

Delete a subscriber permanently

Unsubscribing keeps the address with the status Unsubscribed: it is your record that this person left. Delete someone only when they ask you to erase their details.

  1. On their row, select the red Delete permanently icon.
  2. Read the message, which names the address.
  3. Select Delete permanently to confirm, or Cancel to keep them.
The dialog names the address you are about to erase

Once the address is deleted, nothing here records that this person asked to stop: your campaigns reach it again only if it signs up again. There is no way to import a list into the console, but if you keep an old copy of your list, in an export or another mailing tool, do not email this address from it.

The console says Subscriber deleted. and the row is gone.

The address and its record are gone

Warning

Deleting cannot be undone, and it also removes the record that this person unsubscribed. If they only want to stop receiving email, use Unsubscribe instead.

Could not delete that subscriber. means nothing was deleted. Try again.

A long list

The list shows 50 subscribers to a page. Below the last row, Previous and Next move between pages, and the numbers between them show the page you are on and how many there are (2 / 2).

On the last page, Next is greyed out

To reach one person quickly, search by email instead of paging. Changing tab or searching takes you back to the first page.

No subscribers yet, or a list that does not load

A new store's page says No subscribers yet. All three counters are 0 and Export CSV is greyed out.

Nobody has subscribed yet

If you expected subscribers, check that the sign-up form shows on your storefront: the Newsletter section must be on your home page and have a title. People who subscribed but never confirmed still appear here as Pending.

When the page says Could not load subscribers. select Try again. If it keeps failing, reload the page, then open a support ticket.

The list could not load; Try again asks for it once more

To see this page, a staff member needs the View subscribers permission. Exporting, unsubscribing and deleting also need Manage subscribers and campaign drafts. The Store owner and Store manager roles have both; Sales staff has neither. See Staff roles: what each one can see and do.

Sending campaigns to your subscribers (Growth and up)

The Subscribers page, the sign-up form and the export are on every plan, Free included, so your list grows from day one. Writing and sending email campaigns to it is on Growth and up. On Free and Starter, the Campaigns page shows Campaigns are on a higher plan and a See plans button instead of the composer, with any campaigns you already have listed below it. Select See plans to see which plan includes campaigns and its price. See Campaigns need the Growth plan and Plans and what each includes.

Next, write and send your first campaign, or choose who receives it and when.
