Change your password

The Account tab: your current password, a new one that meets the rules, and what each message means when the form refuses it.

Last updated

Change the password you sign in to the console with, from the Account tab in Settings. You need your current password. If you have forgotten it, see Reset a forgotten password instead.

Open the Account tab

  1. In the sidebar, under Administration, open Settings.
  2. Select the Account tab, the last one in the row. Settings opens on the first tab your role shows, which for the store owner is Store.
The Account tab holds one card: your password

The tab is about you, not the store, so it has no Save changes button: the Change password button on the card does the saving.

BoxRequiredWhat to type
Current passwordYesThe password you sign in with now.
New passwordYes8 to 100 characters, with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and a symbol. Different from your current password.
Confirm new passwordYesThe new password again, exactly.

Note

Every staff member can open the Account tab, whatever their role. A role that can neither view nor edit the store’s settings sees fewer tabs. The built-in Store manager role sees Operations, with your search synonyms only, and Account. The Sales staff role sees Account alone, and Settings opens on it. See Staff roles: what each one can see and do.

Sales staff, and any role with no settings permission and no View content, see only their own password.

Your current password

  1. In Current password, type the password you use now.

We ask for it so that nobody who finds your console open on someone else’s computer can lock you out by changing your password.

Signed up with Google and never set a password? You have no current password to type. Sign out, select Forgot password? on the sign-in page and create one there. See Reset a forgotten password.

A strong new password: the rules and the meter

  1. In New password, type your new password.

As soon as you start typing, a checklist appears under the box. Each line turns green with a tick when your password meets it:

  • At least 8 characters
  • An uppercase letter (A–Z)
  • A lowercase letter (a–z)
  • A number
  • A symbol, such as ! @ # or -

When all five are ticked, the strength meter joins them: a four-part bar that fills two, three or four parts, and Password strength: followed by Weak, Medium or Strong. The checklist decides whether the password is accepted. The meter tells you how hard it is to guess, so aim for Strong. Under a weak or medium rating, a tip says what would help most, such as Avoid the account name or email address. if the password contains part of your email.

Every rule ticked, and rated Strong
  1. In Confirm new password, type the new password again.
  2. Select Change password. The button reads Changing… while we save.

Tip

Arabic letters count as none of the rules: not as an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter or a symbol, even though the checklist ticks A symbol for them. Use A to Z for the letter rules, and add a symbol such as ! @ # or -. Length helps most: four or five unrelated words, joined by symbols, are strong and easy to remember.

When the two do not match

The two new passwords do not match.

New password and Confirm new password are not exactly the same. Nothing has changed. Type the new password into both boxes again, carefully, and select Change password.

Both new-password boxes must match exactly

Too weak, or the same as your current one

Use at least 8 characters with an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and a symbol.

Your new password misses at least one line of the checklist: look for the lines with an empty circle instead of a tick, and add what they ask for. In the example below, the password has no uppercase letter and no symbol.

The open circles show what is missing

The same message appears if any of the three boxes is still empty, or if the new password is longer than 100 characters, even with every line ticked. Fill in all three, and keep the new password to 100 characters or fewer.

The new password has to be different from the current one.

You typed your current password as the new one. Choose a password you have not been using.

A new password has to be new

The current password is not right

That is not your current password.

What you typed in Current password does not match the password on your account. Nothing has changed, and this does not count towards the sign-in pause that follows too many wrong passwords on the sign-in page. Check Caps Lock and your keyboard language, type it again and select Change password.

Check the first box: the current password is wrong

Cannot remember your current password? Sign out, then select Forgot password? on the sign-in page. See Reset a forgotten password.

Password changed

When the change goes through, a message appears: Password changed. Your other devices are now signed out. The three boxes empty, ready for next time.

Done: you are still signed in here

You stay signed in on this browser: the console signs you in again with the new password straight away. From now on, use the new password everywhere you sign in.

If you see Could not change the password. Try again., the console could not finish the change: your connection dropped, our server had a problem, too many sign-in requests came from your account or your network in the last minute, or the server refused the new password, for example because its only symbol is an Arabic letter. Wait a minute and try again. If you are then signed out, sign in with the new password first: the change may have gone through before the message appeared.

Other devices are signed out

Changing your password signs your account out on every other computer, phone and browser. Each one goes to the sign-in page the next time it loads or saves anything, and needs the new password to get back in. Anyone who knew your old password is shut out the same way.

  • Continue with Google is not affected. If you also sign in with Google, it keeps working after the change.
  • Staff accounts are not affected. Your password is yours alone; each staff member signs in with their own. When someone leaves the store, change your password only if they knew it, and suspend or remove their own staff account. See Change, suspend or remove a staff member.
