Your customers can pay you by cash on delivery, by card, or both, and you choose which your checkout offers. This article explains each way, where the money goes, what it costs you, and what has to be in place before the card option appears at your checkout.
Cash on delivery: every plan, no company needed
Cash on delivery (COD) works on every plan, Free included. It needs nothing from you: no registered company, no account with a payment provider, no card of your own. Every new store starts with it turned on, so you can take your first order the day you open.
At checkout the customer chooses Cash on delivery, places the order, and pays in cash when the parcel arrives. When your checkout offers both ways, cash on delivery is the one selected first.
A cash order then waits for its money. In your orders list, the COD orders view gathers them: the Order stage reads COD to collect and the Payment column reads Awaiting collection until you record the cash. You record it with the Mark collected button in the Next action column. See record cash collected on delivery.
Card payments through your own HyperPay account
Card payments are on Growth and up. See plans and what each includes.
They run through HyperPay, the payment provider your store uses for cards. You open your own merchant account with HyperPay. Once HyperPay approves it, they give you live keys, and you enter those keys on the Card payments page of the console. That connects your store to your account. Connect HyperPay for card payments walks through it.
We ask nothing of you to sell by card. HyperPay decides who can open an account: they and their bank usually ask for a registered business and a bank account.
At checkout the customer chooses Card. The order is placed first, then HyperPay's card form opens right on the checkout page with Your order is placed. Complete the payment below to confirm it. Until HyperPay confirms the payment, the order shows Awaiting payment in your orders list. The card form and your storefront's footer show the card brands HyperPay takes: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and mada. Which of them your own account accepts is agreed between you and HyperPay.
You do not confirm a card payment yourself. The order moves on by itself as soon as we learn the payment went through, whichever comes first:
- HyperPay's payment notice reaches your store, which is why the webhook secret is needed;
- the customer comes back from the card form to your storefront;
- our check, every few minutes, on card orders still Awaiting payment.
A card checkout the customer never completes is marked Failed after about an hour, and the discount code use, gift card balance and points it was holding go back to the customer. Its items were never taken from stock: a card order takes its stock only once its payment is confirmed.
On Free and Starter, Card payments in the sidebar carries a padlock and your checkout offers cash on delivery only. See why a feature shows a padlock.
The money goes from your customer to your bank, not through us
A card payment goes from your customer's card to your HyperPay account, and HyperPay pays it out to your bank on the schedule you agreed with them. It never passes through NoqtaShop. We never hold your money, so there is no balance with us to withdraw and nothing for us to release.
Cash on delivery is cash in your hand, collected by you or by your delivery provider when the parcel is handed over.
Money going back follows the same path:
- A card refund goes back through HyperPay to the card the customer paid with. See refund an order.
- A cash refund you pay to the customer yourself, then record on the order so it shows in the order's timeline. See how do I refund a cash on delivery order?
No commission from us; HyperPay charges its own fee
We take no commission on any order, on any plan, Free included. You pay us your plan's subscription and nothing per sale, whichever way your customer pays.
HyperPay charges its own processing fee on card payments. That fee is between you and HyperPay, set in your agreement with them, and it shows on your HyperPay statement, not on your NoqtaShop bill. Cash on delivery costs you nothing extra with us.
Your subscription is separate: billed through Stripe
What you pay us and what your customers pay you never mix:
- Your plan is billed to your card through Stripe. You manage it on the Subscription page, where Manage billing lets you update the card and download your invoices. See see your plan, usage and billing.
- Your customers pay you by cash on delivery or through your HyperPay account, nothing else.
Note
Stripe bills your subscription only. Your customers never see it, and it is never a way for them to pay you. If you see Stripe on a statement, it is your NoqtaShop plan.
Turning card payments on: two switches
The card option appears at checkout only when both switches are ticked and HyperPay is fully connected:
- Card payments is ticked on the Commerce tab of Settings. This is the store-wide choice of which methods your checkout offers.
- Your HyperPay keys and webhook secret are saved on the Card payments page, and HyperPay has confirmed the keys, so the badge reads Connected.
- Accept card payments at checkout is ticked on that same page. This one pauses cards without touching anything else.
If any one of them is missing, your checkout and your storefront's footer leave the card option out, and customers pay cash on delivery. Both switches start ticked, so for most stores connecting HyperPay is the only step. Set tax, payment methods and guest checkout covers the Commerce tab in full.
Taking cards only
To take cards only, untick Cash on delivery (COD) on the Commerce tab. The console makes sure your store always has a way to be paid:
- The Commerce tab lets you untick cash on delivery only once card payments work: HyperPay connected, confirmed, holding its webhook secret and switched on. Until then it says Cash on delivery can only be turned off once card payments are connected, confirmed by HyperPay and turned on in Card payments. and does not save.
- While cash on delivery is off, the Card payments page refuses to pause or remove your keys, with Card payments are this store's only way to be paid. Turn cash on delivery on in Settings first.
- If your plan stops including card payments, cash on delivery is turned back on for you.
Warning
One case is left to you. If you replace your keys while cash on delivery is off and HyperPay does not confirm the new ones, your checkout cannot take cards. Customers then see Online payment is not available in this store yet, so an order cannot be placed here. Please contact the store to complete your order. and cannot order at all. Turn cash on delivery on before you change keys.
On Growth and up, connect HyperPay before your first publish
On Growth and up, Connect HyperPay is one of the tasks on your setup list, and your storefront cannot be published until it is done. This holds even if you plan to take cash only. The task is done when:
- your entity ID and access token are saved;
- Accept card payments at checkout is ticked;
- HyperPay has confirmed the keys, so the page's badge reads Connected;
- the webhook secret is saved.
Once the rest of your setup list is done, you can design your storefront in the Storefront Studio while you wait for HyperPay to approve your account. Only publishing waits for this task: Publish stays greyed out, and the Studio shows Finish setup to publish, until the task is done. While you have not yet used the link we emailed you at sign-up, it shows Confirm your email to publish instead. Once you have published, this task never holds your store back again. On Free and Starter the task is not on the list at all. See the setup list before your first publish.
Next, connect HyperPay for card payments, or choose your checkout's payment methods.
