Draft a policy page with AI

AI writes a first draft from your shipping, contact and store settings, never inventing what you have not set, and leaves blanks only you can fill.

Available on the Starter plan and up

Not sure how to word a returns or privacy policy? AI can write a draft of any of your four policy pages from what you have already set up in the console. It never invents a promise you have not made: anything it does not know comes back as a highlighted blank for you to fill.

AI writing is on Starter and up. It does not use AI credits. It drafts the four policy pages only: Our story is yours to tell, so that tab has no drafting buttons. Once your story is written, you can still translate it like any page.

What the AI draft is based on: your own settings

The draft is assembled only from facts your store already holds. Where a fact is missing, the sentence stays in the draft with a blank in square brackets, such as [number] days. The AI is told never to state a delivery time, refund period, fee, law or contact detail you have not given it.

Whether your plan includes returnsYour plan: returns are on Starter and upReturns only

On a plan with returns, the Returns draft also tells customers they can open their order and choose Request a return, the button on their order page. See Handle a return.

It reads nothing else. It does not read the prices, free-delivery thresholds or delivery days on your shipping rates, or the cities and areas inside a zone, and there is no setting for how many days you allow for returns. Expect blanks in all these places, and copy the figures from Shipping rates into them.

So the better your settings, the fewer blanks. Before you draft, check Update your store’s details and Set up shipping zones by area.

Each page always comes back with the same sections, in the same order, the same ones your starter text uses:

PageSections in the draft
ShippingWhere we ship · Dispatch and delivery times · Shipping costs · Tracking your order
ReturnsReturns window · Condition of returned items · How to return an item · Refunds · Items we cannot accept
PrivacyWhat we collect · How we use it · Who we share it with · Your rights · Contacting us
Terms & conditionsWho we are · Orders and prices · Payment · Our responsibilities · Governing law

If the AI has nothing to say for a section, the section still appears, holding a single blank such as [Describe refunds.], so you can see what is missing.

Draft with AI

You draft one page in one language at a time. A new store’s pages already hold our starter text, so the button you meet first sits under the starter sections and reads Draft again with AI. On a page whose sections you have all removed, the empty editor (“Nothing written here yet”) offers Draft with AI from my settings instead; it works the same way, without the question in step 4.

  1. In the sidebar, open Policy pages.
  2. Select the tab of the page, for example Returns.
  3. Under the sections of your main language, select Draft again with AI.
  4. The console asks “Replace this language’s text?”, because the draft replaces the starter text. Select Replace.
Replace throws away every section in this language, the starter text and your own words alike.
  1. Wait while the button reads AI is drafting…, then read the draft. You see “Draft ready — read it through and fill the highlighted blanks.”
Layal’s returns draft: her contact details are filled in, her return rules are four blanks. The other eight blanks are in the Arabic starter text.

The draft writes in what your settings know and leaves what only you decide as blanks. In Layal’s draft, How to return an item reads “Email us at hello@layal-boutique.example or call +962 71 555 0142 with your order number.” and “Tell us which item you are returning.”, from the contact details in her settings. Her rules come back as four blanks: [number] days to return an item, [the condition you accept], [number] working days to refund, and [items you do not take back]. No setting holds a return rule, so expect these blanks on every Returns draft.

The draft is not saved and not published. It sits in the editor until you select Save, and the page’s status does not change until then. If drafting fails, you see “Could not draft this page right now. Try again.” or “Nothing usable came back. Try again.”; nothing in the editor has changed, so try again in a moment.

A draft replaces only the language you drafted. Your other languages keep what they had, our starter text on a new store, which is why Layal’s draft above shows 12 to fill in: 4 blanks in the English draft and 8 in the Arabic starter text. To bring them in line, either:

  • translate your finished main language with Translate to other languages, which replaces the other languages (see below), or
  • open a language’s card and select Draft again with AI there, to draft that language on its own.

A draft in Arabic or French comes back in that language, headings included, and its blanks are written in that language too, such as [اكتب هنا تفاصيل «رد المبلغ».] or [À compléter : Remboursements.].

Fill in the blanks it could not know

Every blank is something only you can decide, like how many days a customer has to return a piece. Blanks are counted at the top of the editor (12 to fill in), across every language of the page, and highlighted in yellow in the preview.

  1. Click into the line with the blank.
  2. Select the bracketed words, brackets included.
  3. Type your real answer. For example, replace [number] with 14.
  4. Repeat until the count is gone, in every language.
  5. Select Save.

Change anything else you like too: the draft is yours to edit like any page. See The highlighted blanks to fill.

Draft a written page again: what it replaces

You can draft a page again at any time, for example after you have added a delivery provider and want the page to name it. It works on a live page too.

  1. Select Draft again with AI under the sections of the language you want.
  2. If that language already has text, the console asks first: “Replace this language’s text?”
  3. Select Replace to draft again, or Cancel to keep what you have.
The new draft replaces the old one in the editor. The live page does not change until you save.

A new draft is written from your settings again, so the rules you had filled in come back as blanks: Layal’s live page shows 4 to fill in again, and you fill them before you save. Only the language you drafted is replaced; your other languages stay as they are. Until you save, your storefront keeps showing the previous version. If you change your mind, leave the page without saving and choose Leave page or Discard changes.

Warning

Drafting again replaces every section in that language, including clauses you wrote yourself. Copy anything you want to keep before you select Replace.

Check it before publishing, then translate it

A draft reads well, but it is still a statement your customers will hold you to. Before you publish:

  • Read every section against how you really work: who pays for a return, how you refund, which items you cannot take back.
  • Fill every blank. If you save with blanks left, the console asks “Publish with blanks?” first.
  • Use Preview to read the page in your store’s own fonts and colours.

Then translate your main language into your other languages with Translate to other languages (Starter and up; it uses AI translation credits), read each language, tick Published on the storefront and select Save. The full steps are in Write and publish your policy pages.

Note

Neither the draft nor our starter text is legal advice. If a clause matters to your business, have it checked.

Plans with AI writing

AI writing is included on Starter, Growth, Business and Enterprise, and it does not count against your AI credits. On Free, both drafting buttons carry a padlock: Draft again with AI under a page’s sections, and Draft with AI from my settings on an empty page. Selecting either of them changes nothing in the editor and shows a message naming the plan that includes it and its price, “This is on Starter — $19/month.”, with See plans.

On Free the AI buttons are locked; you can still finish the starter text or write the page yourself.

On every plan you can finish the starter text by hand, or write the page yourself with Start from blank. To move to a plan with AI writing, see Upgrade or change your plan and Plans and what each includes.

Drafting needs permission to edit content: the Store owner and the Store manager have it.
