When your store sells in more than one language, you can write your storefront text once and let Translate to other languages fill the same fields in your other languages. It fills only the fields that are empty there and never touches words you have already written. AI translation is on Starter and up.
What Translate to other languages fills, and what it keeps
The button sits at the top of the Content tab of the Storefront Studio. It translates from the language you are editing — the one selected at the top of the Studio — into every other language your store sells in.
It fills:
- Every field of the Hero, About section, Trust badges, Reviews and Newsletter groups that you have written in this language and that is still empty in another language.
- Your announcements, matched by position. Your fourth English announcement fills the fourth Arabic one if that one is empty, and adds it if the Arabic list is shorter.
It keeps:
- Anything already written in the other language — even if you have changed the original since. To replace a translation, edit it yourself, or clear that field in the other language and translate again.
- Fields you left blank in this language. Only your own words are translated, never the grey examples.
Badge icons and pictures are the same in every language, so there is nothing to translate there. The storefront’s own words — its menus, cart and checkout — already come in each of your languages; this button is only for the words you write.
When there is nothing to fill — everything you wrote is already filled in your other languages, or you have not written anything in this language yet — the button is greyed out.
Each text uses one AI translation credit for each language it is missing in. An announcement written in English and missing in both Arabic and French uses 2 credits; a headline already written in French and missing only in Arabic uses 1. Credits are counted when the text is sent, and a translation that does not come back is not charged.
Your plan gives you a monthly allowance of AI translation credits: 3,000 on Starter, 12,000 on Growth and 40,000 on Business. Enterprise has no limit. The same allowance pays for translating products, categories, collections, journal posts, policy pages and FAQ answers. See what is left on the Subscription page, and read How AI credits work.
Translate and check the result in the preview
- In the sidebar, under Storefront, open Content.
- At the top of the Studio, select the language you write in — for example, English.
- Write or change your text in that language. Layal Boutique, for example, added a fourth announcement: “New in: the Eid abaya edit”.
- Select Translate to other languages. While it works, the button reads Translating… and a Working with AI… panel covers the console.
- When Missing translations filled. appears, select your other language at the top of the Studio — Arabic here.
- Read each filled field and correct anything that does not sound like your store. Check names, prices and any wording that only makes sense in one language.
- Select Save draft to keep the translations, or Publish to make them live. Until you do, they are part of your unsaved draft — see Save a draft and publish your storefront.
When only some fields were filled
An amber message, Some translations could not be filled., means some fields were filled and others are still empty.
- Select your other language at the top of the Studio and see which fields are still empty.
- Go back to the language you write in and select Translate to other languages again. Only the fields that are still empty are sent.
Only the translations that come back are charged, on each try. You can also type the missing translations yourself.
When nothing could be filled
A red message, No translations were filled. Check the translation service., means the translation came back with nothing to fill. Your text has not changed.
Nothing came back, so no credits were used. There is nothing for you to check on your side. Try again in a few minutes. If it keeps happening, open a support ticket and tell us which language you were translating from.
When translation fails
If the translation could not run at all, a red message appears and nothing is filled. Nothing is charged for a translation that did not run.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Could not fill translations. | Our server could not finish the request. You also see this if your role does not include Edit storefront design. | Try again. If your role is the reason, ask the store owner. |
| Could not reach the server. Check your connection and try again. | Your connection dropped before the request reached us. | Check your connection, then try again. |
| AI translation is not included in this plan. | Your plan does not include AI translation. | Write the other language yourself, or move to Starter or above — see Plans and what each includes. |
| You have used all AI translation credits for this month. | Your monthly AI translation allowance cannot cover what was sent. Nothing is filled and nothing is charged. | Write the other language yourself, wait for your allowance to renew on the 1st, or ask us for more. Credits cannot be bought in the console. |
When this month’s allowance is used up, the message appears as soon as you select Translate to other languages, and your other language stays as it was:
The store owner and store managers can translate, because both can design the storefront. If a staff member is refused, see Staff roles: what each one can see and do.
Stores that sell in one language
When your store sells in one language, the Studio shows no language buttons and no Translate to other languages button: there is nothing to translate into.
Free stores sell in one language. Starter sells in English and Arabic, and Growth and up add French. You choose your languages in Settings — see Set your store’s languages and currency.
Note
When you add a language, its fields on the Content tab start empty, and a section with nothing written does not appear. Until you write or translate them, your homepage in the new language shows only the sections that need no words of yours.
Next, go back to Write your storefront text to polish the wording, or see how product names and descriptions are translated in Translate a product to your other languages.
