Add a product

Create a product from start to finish — details and translation, price and stock, options, specifications and the search preview — and save it as a draft.

Last updated

This article walks you through adding a product from an empty form to a saved draft: its details and translations, its price and stock, and everything the form checks before it saves. Your first save keeps the product as a draft, so customers see nothing until you publish it.

Adding a product start to finish: name, price, SKU, then Save.

Open the new product form

  1. In the sidebar, open Products and select Products under it. You can also open your products list (opens in a new tab) directly.
  2. Select Add product at the top of the list.

The New product form opens on its Details tab. Along the top are the tabs Details, Media, Pricing, Variants, Specifications and SEO. Under the title, a badge tells you whether anything still needs saving: No unsaved changes on an empty form, Unsaved changes as soon as you type. Back to products returns to the list, and the ? beside the title opens this article.

A new product starts empty, with Draft as its status and no category.

This form adds one product at a time. To add many at once from a spreadsheet, import them with a CSV file — on Starter and up.

Note

Adding products needs the products permissions. The store owner and the store manager have them; sales staff can see products but not add or change them. See roles and permissions.

Details: name, brand, link, descriptions and category

The Details tab holds what customers read about the product. The Product identity card is written in your store’s primary language, shown in the chip at its top right (for example English).

  1. Type the product’s name in Name.
  2. Fill in the other fields you need, then choose a category in Product settings.
The product link fills itself in from the name as you type.
FieldWhat it isRequired?
NameThe product’s name on the storefront, in your primary language. Up to 500 characters.Yes
BrandThe maker or label, for example Layal. Shown above the name on the product page. Up to 200 characters. No
Product linkThe product’s address on your storefront, made from the name. You cannot type in it — see the product link.Made for you
DescriptionThe full description on the product page: fabric, fit, how it is made, how to care for it.No
Short descriptionOne or two lines shown near the top of the product page, under the name and above the price. The product’s search description is made from it too.No
CategoryWhere the product sits in your catalogue. Choose No category to leave it out of every category. No

In Product settings, Status shows Draft on a new product, with the line “New products are saved as Draft. Publish after reviewing.” You change the status after the first save.

To choose a category, open the Category list, search with Search categories… if you have many, and select one. Only the most specific categories can be chosen: a parent such as Women is greyed out, and you pick Dresses under it. If the list says No categories yet, organise your products into categories first, or save without one and add it later.

Below the primary language, each other store language gets its own translation card.

The tips beside the fields

Some labels have a small i button. Select it to open a tip; select anywhere else or press Esc to close it.

  • Product link — on every plan. It explains that the link is made from the name and changes with it.
  • Name, Description and Category — on plans that include AI variant suggestions (Growth and up). These tips help AI understand the product when it suggests variants, and they make good product pages anyway.
Name: a clear product type plus what makes it different, never one vague word.

The naming tip asks for a clear product type plus known details, like “cotton crew neck t-shirt”, rather than a vague word like “Bottle”.

Description: mention only the options you really sell.

The description tip asks you to mention the variants you really sell — size, colour, material, capacity — and nothing you do not stock.

Category: choose the most specific one available.

The category tip asks for the most specific category you have, because a precise category tells sizes, capacities and flavours apart.

The Product link is your product’s address on the storefront, for example emerald-satin-slip-dress. NoqtaShop makes it from the name as you type: lower-case words joined by hyphens. Arabic names give Arabic links. You cannot type in the field, and you never need to: if another product already uses the same link, a number is added to keep each address unique, such as emerald-satin-slip-dress-2. A deleted product gives its link back, so a product you add again under a deleted product’s name gets the same link, with no number.

The link follows the name, so a new name means a new link.

Under the field, a hint says the link is generated from the name. On a saved product it shows the full path instead, such as Available: /products/terracotta-linen-shirt-dress. That path is not the product’s address: customers reach the product at /product/ followed by the link, such as /product/terracotta-linen-shirt-dress, and an address with /products/ opens a storefront page that says That link did not work. See the product link.

The translation card for your other languages

If your store sells in more than one language, each extra language gets a card under Translated storefront content. A card is closed until you open it, and its header shows how far it has got: 4/4 completed with a Complete pill, or a pill such as 4 missing fields.

  1. Open the card for a language, for example العربية.
  2. Fill in Name, Brand, Description and Short description in that language. The card’s own Product link is made from the translated name.
Each language gets its own name, link and descriptions.

The card has two buttons:

  • Copy missing from primary copies your primary-language text into the fields that are still empty, ready for you to rewrite. It never overwrites what you have typed.
  • Translate missing fills the empty fields with an AI translation. AI translation is on Starter and up and uses AI translation credits.

The Translation health panel on the right adds the cards up — for example 4 missing fields and the languages that need them — and Translate missing fields translates every empty field in every language at once. Before you type anything, it says Nothing to translate yet and the button waits. For the whole translation flow, see translate a product.

A store that sells in one language has no translation cards and no Translation health panel.

Pricing, variants, specifications and SEO before the first save

You can fill the other tabs before you save; everything is saved together.

  1. Open the Pricing tab and enter the Price and the SKU. Both are needed to save (see what the form asks for).
Price and SKU are the two pricing fields a product cannot be saved without.

The Pricing tab also holds the compare-at price, cost, stock and weight. Each field is explained in set a product’s price, cost and stock. A new product starts with a stock quantity of 0 and Track inventory on, so enter how many you have before you publish.

Add options such as size or colour here if the product comes in several versions.

The Variants tab is for a product that comes in several versions, such as sizes or colours. Fill the Pricing tab first: generated variants start from its price and SKU. See product variants.

Specifications are the material, care and origin rows on the product page.

The Specifications tab holds rows like Material — Linen, shown on the product page in the order you set. See product specifications.

The search title and description come from your details; this tab only previews them.

The SEO tab previews how the product appears in search results. You do not type here: the search title and description are filled in from the name and descriptions. Until you write them, the tab lists what is missing. The SEO tab is on Starter and up; on Free it shows a padlock. See product SEO.

Photos come after the first save

Photos are added to a saved product, so the Media tab of a new product says “Save the product first to manage images.” with a Save button. The Product video card below it already works on plans that include product video: see Add a video to a product.

Save once, and the photo tools appear in place of the notice.

If you have already typed a name, selecting Media saves the product for you first. If the save goes through, the product opens on its Media tab, ready for photos — see add product photos. If the price or SKU is missing, that save is refused with the same message as Save (see what the form asks for), and the Media tab still shows the save-first notice.

What the form asks for before it saves

The Save button checks the form first and takes you to the tab that needs attention.

  • A name. Without one, the Details tab opens with Enter a product name. under Name, and Enter a product link. under Product link, because the link is made from the name.
  • A price above zero and a SKU. A product without them is not saved, and a message in English appears at the bottom of the screen, such as “Variants Price: 'Price' must be greater than '0'.” or “Variants SKU: 'SKU' must not be empty.” Open Pricing and fill them in.
  • A compare-at price above the price, if you enter one. A lower or equal compare-at price stops the save with a message in English that ends “Compare-at price must be greater than sale price.” Raise it or clear it.
  • A unique SKU. If another product already uses it, the save is refused with a message that names the code, for example Another variant already uses the SKU LY-TLSD-TER-M. Choose another SKU. Change it.
  • A SKU no deleted product holds. A deleted product keeps its SKUs, so its codes cannot be used again. The save is refused with a message that names the code, for example A deleted product still uses the SKU LY-HRSS-SND. Choose another SKU. Give the new product another code, for example with -2 on the end.
  • Complete variants. If the product has variants, each one needs a SKU and a price. Saving with one missing opens the Variants tab.
Saving without a name shows what is missing right under the fields.
The SKU belongs to a product you deleted, so the new product needs another one.

Save: a new product starts as a draft

  1. Select Save at the top right. On a phone, Save sits in a bar at the bottom of the screen.

While it saves, the button reads Saving…. Then the message Product created. appears and the product opens on its Edit product page, on the Media tab. There you also get Duplicate in the header and a History tab, which is on Starter and up.

The product is saved as a Draft: it is in your products list, but customers cannot see it on your storefront. If you saved it with stock above 0, its stock history starts with an Opening stock line for each variant, from 0 to the number you typed — see track and adjust stock.

Tip

Before you publish, add photos and check the stock quantity. With Track inventory on, a product with a stock of 0 cannot be bought.

Next, add product photos, then publish the product when it is ready to sell. To change it later, see Edit a product and save your changes.
