This article shows you how to add photos to a product, choose the main one, put them in order, and download, replace or delete them. Photos save as you add them: there is nothing to save afterwards.
Save the product first
Photos belong to a saved product. On a new product, the Media tab says “Save the product first to manage images.” — select Save there, or see add a product. Once the product is saved, it opens on the Media tab, ready for photos.
- Open your products list (opens in a new tab) and select the product.
- Select the Media tab. Its count shows how many photos the product has.
Note
Adding and changing photos needs the products permissions — the store owner and the store manager have them. See roles and permissions.
Upload photos: JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 10 MB, 20 per product
- Select Upload image, or the Add image tile once the product has photos.
- Choose your photos from your computer or phone. You can pick several at once.
The photos upload straight away, one after another, in the order you chose them — the button reads Uploading… while they do. Images uploaded. appears when they are all in (Image uploaded. for a single photo). There is no need to select Save: photos save as you add them.
You can also add photos without the button:
- Drop them on the Upload images area, or click that area to open the same picker.
- Paste one with Ctrl+V (⌘+V on a Mac) anywhere on the Media tab, as the tile’s or paste from clipboard hint says — for example a photo you copied from another window. A paste into a text box stays in the box.
Once the product has a photo, the tab shows:
- Upload images — shows the limits, JPG, PNG, WebP · up to 10 MB · Recommended 2000 × 2000 px, and the places left (18 slots left). Click it or drop photos on it to add them.
- Media health — 2/20 images used, whether a main photo is chosen (Primary image selected), whether every photo has alt text (Alt text complete), and the recommended size.
- The photo grid — every photo as a card, followed by the Add image tile.
Below the photos sits the Product video card — see add a video to a product.
| Limit | What it means |
|---|---|
| JPG, PNG or WebP | A format such as HEIC, which some phones save, is refused with “File type is not allowed.” Save the photo as JPG first. |
| Up to 10 MB | A larger photo is not uploaded: it is left out before the upload starts, with Photos can be up to 10 MB. Larger ones were not uploaded. The other photos still upload. Save a smaller copy of a large camera photo, for example by exporting it at a lower quality, and add that. |
| 20 photos per product | At 20, the Add image tile disappears and 0 slots left shows. Delete a photo to add another. If you choose more photos than there is room for, the first ones fill the room and A product holds up to 20 images, so the extra files were not added. appears. |
| Images only | Other files chosen or dropped with your photos are left out, with Only images can be added, so the other files were left out. The photos still upload. |
| 2000 × 2000 px | Recommended, not required: square photos of this size look sharp everywhere. |
| Your plan’s storage | When it is full, the upload is refused with “This plan has reached its storage limit. Delete some files or upgrade to store more.” Deleting a photo gives its space back, unless a duplicated product still uses the same file. |
If an upload fails, a message says so. When the store gives the reason — the file type or your storage, as in the table above — you see that reason. Otherwise you see Could not upload the image. Try again., or Could not upload some of the images. Try again. when you added several. The photos that worked stay in the grid. Check your connection and the files, then upload the missing ones again. Every photo also counts towards your plan’s storage — see plans and what each includes.
What makes a good product photo
On plans with AI photo enhancement (Growth and up), an i next to Product images opens AI image tips. The tips are good advice on any plan:
- Clean product photo — one product, centred, sharp and well lit, with its edges visible and a simple background.
- Avoid a distracting photo — a crowded scene, a blurry or cropped product, heavy shadows, or other objects competing with it.
- Fully visible product — do not cut off important edges.
- Balanced lighting — no strong shadows, glare or very dark photos.
- Clean background — no watermarks, stickers or promotional text.
Shoot the front, the back and a close-up of the fabric or detail, so customers can judge the product as if it were in their hands.
The main photo, and the order of the rest
The photo with the Primary badge is the product’s main photo. Customers see it on product cards in your storefront, in search results and in their cart, and the product page’s gallery opens on it. The first photo you upload to an empty gallery becomes the main one, and in the console the main photo always sits first in the grid.
- To choose a different main photo, point at that photo and select the star (Set as primary).
Primary image updated. appears, and the badge moves to that photo. The main photo has no star of its own.
The gallery on the product page shows the photos in the same order as the console grid: the main photo first, then the others in their order.
- To change the order of the other photos, drag a photo by the dotted handle at its top onto the photo whose place it should take.
The new order saves as you drop the photo — Saving image order… shows while it does, and the product page follows it.
Alt text, and the Missing alt text filter
Alt text is a short description of a photo. Screen readers read it aloud to customers who cannot see the photo, and search engines use it to understand your pictures.
NoqtaShop writes the alt text for you when you upload a photo, from the product’s brand, name and category and the photo’s place — for example “Layal Terracotta linen shirt dress in Dresses - main product photo”. The text is fixed when you upload the photo, always uses English words such as “in” and “main product photo” (even around an Arabic name), and does not change if you rename the product later. So fill in the brand, name and category on the Details tab before you upload your photos. You cannot type your own alt text in the console.
Because the console always writes alt text, the tab shows all alt texts filled and Alt text complete, and the Missing alt text filter does not appear. The line at the top of the tab, “Add alt text to each image and save it”, has no field behind it.
Select several photos to download, enhance or delete them
- Select the round checkbox at the top right of each photo you want.
A bar appears above the grid with the number selected.
- Enhance with AI creates storefront-ready versions of the selected photos, one by one, for you to approve. It is on Growth and up; on a lower plan it shows a padlock. See enhance product photos with AI.
- Download saves the selected photos to your device, one file per photo.
- Delete deletes every selected photo after one question — see below.
- The × at the end clears the selection.
To delete the selected photos:
- Select Delete in the bar.
- In Delete the selected images? — “This deletes 2 images from the product gallery. This cannot be undone.” — select Delete, or Cancel to keep them and your selection.
The selection clears and the bar goes away as soon as you confirm, while the photos are deleted one after another. Images deleted. appears when they are gone, or Could not delete. if one of them could not be deleted — select it and try again. With one photo selected, the question is Delete image? and the message Image deleted., as for a single photo. A photo whose AI preview is still waiting is left out: approve or discard the preview first.
To download one photo, point at it and select its download button.
Replace a photo
Replacing swaps the picture but keeps its place: its position, its Primary badge if it has one, and any variant that uses it.
- Point at the photo and select the upload button (Replace image).
- Choose the new photo.
Image replaced. appears. A photo that has an AI preview waiting cannot be replaced until you approve or discard the preview.
Delete a photo
- Point at the photo and select the bin button (Delete).
- In Delete image? — “This deletes the image from the product gallery. This cannot be undone.” — select Delete, or Cancel to keep it.
Image deleted. appears. If you delete the main photo, the next photo in the order becomes the main one. A variant that used the deleted photo shows the product’s other photos instead.
Warning
A deleted photo cannot be brought back. Download it first if you might want it again.
Next, enhance your photos with AI, add a video, or give each variant its own photo.
