This article shows you how to add a short video to a product, replace it or take it off, and what to do when an old video link stops the product from saving. A few seconds of the product moving — a dress turning, fabric catching the light — answers what a photo cannot.
Product video is on Starter and up. See plans and what each includes.
Where the video shows on the product page
Each product can have one video. On your storefront it appears on the product page, in the column beside the photos, under the description. On a phone, where the page is one column, it comes after the description.
The video plays only when the customer presses play, with the usual controls for sound and full screen. Until then it costs the customer almost no data. It is your own file, played without YouTube or any other outside service, so nothing about your customers is shared with one.
Upload a video: MP4 or WebM, up to 50 MB
- Open the product and select the Media tab.
- Scroll below the photos to the Product video card.
- Select Upload a video.
- Choose an MP4 or WebM file of up to 50 MB.
Nothing on the card shows progress while the file uploads, so wait for Video uploaded. before you do anything else; do not select Upload a video again. The card then shows a player, so you can watch the video, and under it the name the file is stored under — a code rather than your original file name.
- Select Save at the top of the page.
Warning
The video is only added to the product when you select Save. Until then the badge says Unsaved changes, and if you leave the page the video is not kept.
The messages an upload can show:
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| That file is over 50 MB. Trim the clip or export it smaller. | The file is too big. | Shorten the clip or export it at a lower quality. A clip of 10 to 30 seconds is plenty. |
| Only MP4 and WebM can play on the storefront. | The file is another format, such as MOV. | Export or convert it to MP4. Most phones and editing apps can save MP4. |
| Could not upload the video. Try again. | The upload did not finish. | Check your connection and try again. |
| This plan has reached its storage limit. Delete some files or upgrade to store more. | Your plan’s storage is full. | Delete files you no longer need, such as old product photos, or move to a plan with more storage. |
Every video counts towards your plan’s storage. Replacing or removing a video, or leaving the page without saving after an upload, does not give that space back. If your storage is full, the upload is refused with “This plan has reached its storage limit. Delete some files or upgrade to store more.”
Tip
Film in good light, keep the phone steady, and keep the product filling the frame.
Replace or remove it
To change the video:
- Select Replace at the top right of the Product video card.
- Choose the new MP4 or WebM file, then select Save.
To take the video off the product:
- Select the bin button (Remove video) next to Replace.
- Select Save.
The card goes back to No video yet, and the video disappears from the product page once you save. Removing asks for no confirmation; if you change your mind before saving, leave the page without saving — see edit a product — and the video stays.
An old video link that has to be removed before saving
Products used to point at a video on YouTube or Vimeo. Those links no longer play on your storefront, and a product that still carries one cannot be saved. The card says so: “This product points at a hosted link, which is no longer supported. It does not play on the storefront, and the product cannot be saved until you remove it — upload a file instead.” The old link is shown underneath.
If you try to save such a product, the save is refused with a message in English, “Video Url: Video must be a file uploaded to this store.” — and none of your other changes are saved either.
- Select the bin button (Remove video), or select Replace and upload the clip as a file.
- Select Save.
The product now saves normally. If you want the same clip back, download it from where it is hosted and upload it as an MP4.
On the Free plan
On Free, Upload a video and Replace show a padlock. Selecting one opens nothing: a message names the plan that includes product video and its price, with a See plans link.
If your store moves down to Free, videos you already added stay on your products and keep playing, and you can still remove them. Adding or replacing a video needs Starter or above — see why a feature shows a padlock.
Next, add photos to the product to go with your video.
