Edit a product and save your changes

A product’s tabs, its category, saving, and what happens when you leave with changes not saved or open a tab your plan does not include.

Last updated

This article shows you how to open a product, find your way around its tabs, change its category and save your changes — and what the page does when you leave with a change not saved, open a tab your plan does not include, or the product will not load.

Open a product

  1. In the sidebar, open Products and select Products under it, or open your products list (opens in a new tab).
  2. Select the product’s name, or the pencil button (Edit) at the end of its row.

The Edit product page opens on the Details tab. In its header you find Back to products, the ? that opens this article, the save badge (No unsaved changes or Unsaved changes), Duplicate and Save.

A saved product opens on Details, with Duplicate and Save at the top right.

The page’s address remembers the tab you are on, so refreshing the page — or sending the link to a colleague — opens the same tab.

Note

Editing products needs the products permissions. The store owner and the store manager have them; sales staff can see products but not change them. See roles and permissions.

The tabs

A saved product has seven tabs. Media shows how many photos the product has, and Variants how many variants — for example 2 photos and 5 variants. A product without options shows no count on Variants.

TabWhat you change thereSaved by
DetailsName, brand, descriptions, translations, status and categorySave
MediaPhotos and the product videoPhotos save on their own; the video needs Save
PricingPrice, compare-at price, cost, SKU, stock and weightSave, on a product without options. With options, change them on Variants, or select Apply prices to all variants (prices only) and then Save
VariantsOptions such as size and colour, and each variant’s SKU, price and stockSave; a stock change saved in the stock window (Stock history) is kept at once
SpecificationsThe rows on the product page, like material and careSave
SEONothing to type: a preview of the product in search results—
HistoryNothing to type: the changes made in the console to the product, its prices, stock, photos and variants, with who made each and when. Some changes are left out — see what is not in the history—
On a saved product, Status is a list you can change.

On the Details tab, Status is now a list with Draft, Active and Archived. Choose one and select Save — see publish, archive, duplicate or delete a product. Duplicate in the header makes a copy of the product and opens it.

Where a product’s price and stock live depends on its options. A product without options keeps them on the Pricing tab, which saves with Save like the other tabs, and its Variants tab opens on No variants yet. A product with options keeps them on each variant: its Pricing tab says Prices are managed per variant., and you change them on the Variants tab — see set a product’s price, cost and stock. For translations, see translate a product; for the History tab, see product history.

Renaming a product

The Product link follows the Name. When you change the name and save, the product gets a new address on your storefront, and a link you shared before no longer opens it.

Warning

Before you rename a product you have already shared — in a post, a message or an ad — update those links after you save, or keep the name.

Change its category

  1. On the Details tab, open the Category list in Product settings.
  2. Type in Search categories… to narrow the list, or scroll it.
  3. Select the new category. Parent categories are greyed out: choose the most specific category under them. Choose No category to take the product out of every category.
Only the most specific categories can be chosen; parents are greyed out.
  1. Select Save.

The product moves to its new category on your storefront after you save. To move many products at once, see edit many products at once; to change the categories themselves, see organise products into categories and edit or delete a category.

Unsaved changes, and Save

As soon as you change something on the Details, Pricing, Variants or Specifications tab, or the product video, the badge under the title turns to Unsaved changes. Change it back, and the badge returns to No unsaved changes.

Unsaved changes means the storefront still shows the old version.
  1. Select Save at the top right. On a phone, Save sits in a bar at the bottom of the screen.

While it saves, the button reads Saving…. When it finishes, Product updated. appears at the bottom of the screen and the badge returns to No unsaved changes.

Product updated: your change is live wherever the product shows.

On a product with options, what you type on the Pricing tab is the one thing Save does not keep: change those prices on the Variants tab, or select Apply prices to all variants before Save. See products with variants.

Two things can stop a save or change what it keeps:

  • A save that deletes variants with a past. If you removed sizes or colours, and a variant the save would delete still has stock, a stock history or past orders, Save first asks Delete variants with stock or history? and names them. Delete and save deletes them and saves; Cancel saves nothing, and your changes stay on screen. See edit variants.
  • A stock number an order changed first. If an order took stock after you opened the page, a stock number you typed is not saved, and the red message Saved, except the stock of … names the variant and its stock now. Everything else is saved. See change a saved product’s price and stock.

If the save does not go through, a message says why — the reason, when the store gives one, such as Another variant already uses the SKU LY-TLSD-TER-M. Choose another SKU. or A deleted product still uses the SKU LY-HRSS-SND. Choose another SKU., and otherwise Could not save changes. — and your changes stay on screen with Unsaved changes. Fix what it names and select Save again. The checks Save makes are listed in add a product.

Leaving with a change not saved

If you select a link in the console while the badge says Unsaved changes, NoqtaShop stops you with Unsaved changes: “You have unsaved changes. If you leave now, you will lose them.”

Cancel keeps you on the product; Leave page throws your changes away.
  • Cancel keeps you on the product with your changes, so you can save them.
  • Leave page leaves and discards the changes.

If you close the browser tab, refresh, or type another address, your browser shows its own warning instead.

Photos are not part of this: uploading, replacing, reordering, deleting and choosing the main photo save as you do them, and so do stock changes saved with Save stock action in the stock window that Stock history opens. The product video is part of it — a video you uploaded is only kept once you select Save.

Tabs locked on your plan

Some tabs and buttons belong to higher plans. On a lower plan they show a padlock instead of disappearing.

  • SEO and History are on Starter and up.
  • Translate missing fields (AI translation) is on Starter and up.

The i tips beside Name, Description and Category are simply not shown below Growth.

On Free, SEO and History show a padlock.
  1. Select a locked tab to find out where it lives. The tab does not open: a message names the plan that includes it and its monthly price, with a See plans link to your subscription.
Pressing a padlock names the plan that includes the feature.

A link that points straight at a locked tab opens Details and shows the same message. Nothing is lost on a lower plan: your storefront keeps the search details the product already has, and the history is still recorded, so it is all there when you move up. See why a feature shows a padlock and plans and what each includes.

When a product will not load

If the product cannot be fetched, the page shows Could not load data. with a Try again button, and the same message appears at the bottom of the screen.

Try again fetches the product a second time.
  1. Select Try again.

If it keeps failing, check your internet connection, then go Back to products and search the list for the product by name. If it is not there, someone deleted it. If it is there and still will not open, open a support ticket.

Next, set the product’s price and stock or add its photos.
